An International Online Journal of Idea and Observation

GOWANUS is a new Internet publication of intelligent essay, fiction and review.

GOWANUS is not so much interested in today's news as in the bigger picture, especially how events affect the personal point of view.

GOWANUS knows the world is not only round but varied. GOWANUS is as interested in what concerns human beings in Delhi, Bridgetown or Soweto as in New York, London or Tokyo.

GOWANUS is interested in everything--intelligence in both senses of the word.

If it's done nothing else, the Internet has made possible a free and easy interchange of ideas and opinion without respect to national or other boundaries. GOWANUS wants to take advantage of this new interconnectivity and share the thoughts and experiences of its users world-wide.

We publish articles, essays, short stories and reviews. We pay $15-25 (US).

What are we looking for?

The English-speaking world is vast, encompassing not just nations where English is the first or even the official language. It has become the lingua franca of the planet. Some deplore this state of affairs, others feel a chauvinistic pride. GOWANUS simply means to take advantage of it, connecting writers and readers in Africa, the West Indies, the Far East with those in the US, UK and South Pacific.

We encourage authors to provide a version of the text in his or her native tongue as well as in English. We will try to publish both versions.

Specifically: Send us 1200-4000 words of non-fiction or story on any topic that you think your fellow planet-dwellers may find of interest. GOWANUS wants to know what life is like these days in Kinshasa and Sarajevo, in suburban Cleveland and in Delhi.

Send your submission to in plain ASCII format.

Don't worry if your English is not perfect. That's what editors are for.

P.S. There will be a cash prize awarded to the best article/story in addition to the honorarium indicated.
